Gothic Revival Labyrinths

Although the fortunes of the medieval labyrinths in European churches and cathedrals waned somewhat during the 17th & 18th centuries, a dramatic upsurge of interest in medieval architecture during the mid-19th century, the so-called ‘Gothic Revival,’ also brought the labyrinth back to the attention of architects and artists alike. Between the 1840s and the late 1920s a considerable number of new labyrinths and replicas of former examples were installed in churches and cathedrals across Europe, and also one in America. Indeed, the majority of ‘historic’ labyrinths to be found in churches across Europe today are actually from this Gothic Revival period, and include some of the most splendid installations of their type. They also found their way into a number of civic buildings and private properties at this time, in a flurry of activity unparalleled until the late 20th century revival.
