The English Turf Labyrinth Tour
Provisional Date: May 2009
A rare opportunity to visit seven of England's historic
turf labyrinths, a beautiful hedge maze, see the best of the unusual Victorian
church and cathedral labyrinths and visit one of the finest hedge mazes
in England.
With
pickup options from either London Gatwick or Heathrow airports, we will
spend our first three nights in cozy bed & breakfast accommodation just
down the road from the atmospheric turf labyrinth at Breamore (photo opposite),
on the edge of the New Forest.
From
there we will visit the turf labyrinth at Winchester, a church labyrinth
nearby and the remarkable Watts Chapel. Traveling northward to central
and eastern England, we stop at the historic market town of Saffron Walden,
with its unique turf labyrinth (photo opposite) and restored hedge maze.
From
here we will visit the labyrinth on the village green at Hilton and the
pavement labyrinth in Ely Cathedral (photo opposite), where we will walk
up on the roof of the cathedral! Our next base is the village of Wing,
where we will stay in a 17th century inn, a short stroll from the beautifully
preserved turf labyrinth on the village green.
Traveling north, we will visit the dramatically situated turf labyrinths
at Alkborough (photo opposite) and Dalby. On our final day we will return
to London Stanstead airport (with rail and coach connections into central
London, and many flight connections onwards to Europe). An epic labyrinthine
journey through the scenic English countryside at its springtime best.
