About Us

Jeff and Kimberly Saward are co-founders and directors of Labyrinthos - the Labyrinth Resource Centre, Photo Library and Archive, and publishers of Caerdroia - the Journal of Mazes and Labyrinths. They are also founding members of the Labyrinth Society and currently serve on its Board of Directors. Based in Thundersley, in Southeast England, they travel extensively to give presentations and research the history and distribution of labyrinths and mazes worldwide.

Kimberly Lowelle Saward, PhD, has taught Psychology at Sonoma State University in California and has worked clinically as a school counsellor and somatic therapist. Bringing her perspective as a lifelong student of spiritual practice, pilgrimage and sacred sites, she has been working with labyrinths since 1995 and is currently researching modern and historic uses of the labyrinth, comparing and contrasting their uses in folk customs, mythology, and spiritual development. She has recently published Ariadne's Thread: Legends of the Labyrinth, a psycho-spiritual study of labyrinth folk practices worldwide. Travelling frequently between the USA and Europe to organize and participate in labyrinth-oriented conferences, tours and events, she has a unique cross-cultural insight into the modern resurgence of interest in mazes and labyrinths, and is currently serving as president of the Labyrinth Society.

First captivated by the labyrinth in 1976, Jeff Saward founded Caerdroia, the Journal of Mazes and Labyrinths in 1980. Now in continuous publication for over twenty years, Caerdroia has become an internationally respected forum for news, views, new research and archival material. Many years of searching for labyrinths and mazes has taken Jeff around Europe - from the shores of the Mediterranean to the high Arctic - and around America on numerous occasions. His collection of photographs is unrivalled. Widely considered the world authority on the history and development of mazes and labyrinths, Jeff lectures extensively in the UK, Europe and the USA to both enthusiast and academic groups. He has contributed articles to many journals and magazines and worked with journalists and producers for numerous features in newspapers and magazines and has appeared on radio and television broadcasts in the UK, Europe, USA and Canada.

His extensive knowledge of the subject has ensured that he is frequently consulted to provide information, illustrations and photographs for many of the books on mazes and labyrinths, as well as documentation for archaeological projects, student research and restorations of historical mazes and labyrinths. Most recently he worked as historical editor for the long-awaited English language translation of Hermann Kern's monumental Labyrinthe sourcebook, published in 2000 as Through the Labyrinth. His own book, Magical Paths, a pictorial essay exploring the modern revival of mazes and labyrinths, was published by Mitchell Beazley during 2002 and his latest work, Labyrinths & Mazes, a comprehensive illustrated history of labyrinths and mazes worldwide, has just been published in the UK, USA & Germany, with further editions to follow.
